Jetlag

The term jet lag describes the phenomenon that may occur when crossing time zones. The sleep-wake rhythm and other biorhythms are disturbed by the shift in time and as a result the jet lag causes fatigue and sleep problems. Everyone reacts differently to the jet lag, but most people better bear a flight to the west (gaining hours at day or night) than to the east (day or night hours are lost). The reason for this is that our bodies are not subject to a precise 24-hour clock, but rather to a "system of extended clock periods," which allows to tolerate fluctuations for a few hours.

·        In order to counteract to a jet lag, it is advisable to adjust oneself to the day and night phases in the holiday destination as far as possible. So try to extend or shorten your day. Many people even try to adjust themselves in advance to the time of the holiday destination by going to bed sooner or later than usually.

·        Try to adapt to your daily rhythm in the holiday destination. This means that you stay outdoors during daytime, preferably in daylight; natural daylight inhibits the production of Melatonin, which makes us sleepy. You take the meals at the holiday destination at the time when they are usually served there. You eat breakfast in the holiday destination, even if you would have dinner at home at this time.

·        Nutrition may also help. As a rule, people are more quickly fatigued by carbohydrate-rich than by protein-rich food. Drinking is always important, especially on longer flights, to compensate for the dry air. But alcohol should be avoided, as it just drains more water from the body!

·        For business travelers: schedule your appointments the way you would most comfortably feel at home. Regarding the west make appointments in the morning, local time, and regarding the east make appointments in the evening, local time.
