Better safe than sorry: Taking pictures

For many people a beautiful photo is the best memory of unforgettable holidays. Photographing may however pose a problem, primarily in countries with special political situations or countries with special cultural backgrounds. In general, military facilities are not allowed to be photographed anywhere. This also applies to government buildings, prisons, embassies etc. in many countries. There are also countries like Saudi Arabia where taking photos of shops is not allowed.

Photographing people is not always welcome, either. In the Muslim world unpermitted photographing of people, especially of disguised women, is frowned upon. Better ask the person concerned, if you can take a close-up photograph.

TRIPCHILKIS informs:

Do you know that, especially in Central and South America, but also in many Asian countries, there is the belief that a photo is stealing one’s soul. It is an old belief still rooted in many people.

For pure respect to the people whose country you visit as a tourist, you should always ask for permission to take a photo!
