The area of Ottawa has a long history with funds, that prove a more than 6500 years old settlement. The first European settlers were hunters, who began to enlarge the settlement. Under the reign of Queen Victoria, the British Colony got a new capital and this has been Ottawa. The capital had to represent the British Empire and this is, why the city has been enriched with new architecture: New Parliament and Representative Buildings, new parks and districts have been erected in Victorian Neogothic style.
TRIPCHILKIS HINT: In the summer months from the end of June to around 20th of August you will assist to the Changing of the Guard at Parliament Hill. As the spectacle begins at 10.00 am you should start your drive towards Ottawa early in the morning, to be there at about 09.00 am. Assist to the Changing of the Guard, a ceremony now since 1959 with the Old Guard, the Pipes and Drums that march onto the East Lawn of Parliament Hill.
After this beautiful ceremony stay a little bit longer at Parliament Hill to watch all this amazing buildings. It seems not to be in Ottawa, but in a British city.

Rideau Canal – the canal is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and you will explore it today – but not in a typical walk. You will paddle along it. Reach the Hartwells Lockstation, where you will join the team of Parks Canada. Book your adventure in advance, because you will start from there with your paddle along the Rideau Canal. Passing Ottawa’s cityscape you will learn more about the 19th century buildings, the history of Ottawa and the history of the Canal.

Start from Parliament Hill along the Rideau Canal Pathway and cross the Canal at the Corktown Footbridge at Somerset Street. Ride back to the Ottawa Locks, pass Bytown Museum, continue on the western side of the Ottawa River passing below Parliament Hall and turn right onto the Portage Bridge into Gatineau. Turn to the Voyageurs Pathway and continue to the Canadian Museum of History. Cycle over the Alexandra Bridge back to Ottawa towards the National Gallery of Canada, where you will see also the cathedral Notre Dame on the opposite side. Cycle through the Major’s Hill Park and reach the Fairmont Chateau Laurier where your tour will end.
From Ottawa you drive to Montreal.
Things to do in Montreal: Montreal got its name in memoriam to the French emperor Francois I as Mont Royal. As Ottawa funds proof, that there have been settlements already 5000 years ago.
