The capital of the United States offers so much to see, especially many museums. The TRIPCHILKIS searched for you the most interesting hotspots and so the TRIPCHILKIS suggest to start at The Capitol, the Seat of the United States Congress. Plan your visit in advance buying the tickets on the website of the Capitol. The TRIPCHILKIS also suggest a guided tour, to know best about the institutions and the chambers.
In the afternoon visit the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world. Nowadays it is not only a library but also an exhibition hall and a memorial for guided tour, as the Jefferson Building Guided Tour. You will be impressed by the dimension of the building and the artefacts it hosts.
In later afternoon hours walk to the White House, to see the beautiful illumination. Maybe you will make a “Tour by Night” to see the beautiful illuminated monuments.
You will dedicate your day to the Washington D.C. Memorials and finish your visit at Arlington National Cemetery. Start your tour at Lincoln Memorial, the impressive monument to honor the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (beautiful illuminated by night!).
Then make the tour as the TRIPCHILKIS indicate you on the map: go to see Korean War Veterans Memorial, continue to Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, passing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, continue to Vietnam Veterans Memorial and then walking along Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Arlington Memorial Cemetery – in honor of all the thousands, who have given theirs lives in name of U.S. freedom.
Walk to the Marine Corps Memorial and see the sunset – a picture you will often see in films.
The heart of U.S. defense is the Pentagon. The TRIPCHILKIS suggest to book a Pentagon Tour, which you need to book at least 14 days before arrival! The tour will highlight the significant moments in military history and shows you one of the largest office buildings in the world.
You remain on the traces of Military and visit the National Air & Space Museum. You will learn about the US Air and Space history and see thousands of objects as the 1903 Wright Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, and a lunar rock you can touch. In addition to the exhibition galleries, you may visit also the Albert Einstein Planetarium, Lockheed Martin IMAX® Theater, and the Public Observatory on the east terrace.
Take a time out at Georgetown, Washington DC’s oldest neighborhood. Walk from Dumbartons Oaks Park (have a visit) to Tudor Place, then follow to Blues Alley Club to have a drink. This walking tour gave you some impressions of the nice district. Continue along the C&O Canal, a nice path in summer months.
And then reach the waterfront. Enjoy the lively zone and then take the cruise at Potomac River Alexandria. You have to visit the Old Town, which is so marvelous with brick sidewalks and well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings. Have diner in one of the nice restaurants before returning to your hotel.
If you stay for a longer time, visit the numerous museums in Washington DC or see the next tour about the Capital region.
